ABSTRACT Aim: To determine the frequency of nosocomial infections developed within a year in patients admitted to tertiary pediatric hospital. Materials and Method: The who have been hospitalized at Dr Sami Ulus Children Hospital one-year period between February 1996 - 1997 diagnosed ‘nosocomial infection’ during their follow up were included this study. diagnosis used was based on Center for Disease Control (CDC) diagnostics criteria. Clinical findings recorded besides laboratory imaging data. Results In under consideration, total number 3420 hospitalized. Nosocomial infection detected 9.1% (n=311) these patients. 28.6% (n=89) them acute gastroenteritis, 23.4% (n=73) urinary tract 25.4% (n=79) sepsis. most common etiologic agents K. pneumoniae (%40.3), Salmonella spp. (%43.0) E. coli (%13.4). 77.8% with younger than one old. infection, 28.7% had urethral catheterization. being observed after 16.9±10 days hospitalization. 12.2% (n=38) died. Inadequacy professional staff, insufficient nurses per patient failures hand washing thought be risk factors development infection. Conclusion: is an important cause mortality morbidity pediatrics clinics. steps efforts decrease may listed as surveillance, detection problems taking corresponding precautions take control.
